Indicator for Play
Many local authorities are in the process of developing or reviewing
a corporate policy for play. This could be as part of a cultural
or community strategy or prompted by Best Value reviews. In the
context of a more joined up approach to children's services, play
can lose out unless embedded in a policy framework which provides
the rationale for strategy and action.
To support the process of developing a policy, there is now a recognised
Best Value Performance Indicator. This sets out the elements of
a play policy and enables a local authority to define the status
of its policy according to the three criteria 'advanced' 'established'
or 'emerging'.
The Performance Indicator for Play was drafted by PLAYLINK, Inspire
and the Children's Play Council in conjunction with the Audit Commission,
referenced LIB 115 in the library of local indicators.
The website is a bit tricky to navigate but you should be able
to link to the document at http://www.local-pi-library.gov.uk//SYSTEM/MODULE/PI/ITEM.ASP?ID=720.
When you get to it you will need to look at the supporting table
to see how it works.
Alternatively go to the Library of Local Indicators at http://www.local-pi-library.gov.uk/library.asp#find.
Enter the PI number - "115" in 'search by the reference
number' and click "Search". Finally, click 'i' in the
title box to view it. When you get to it you will need to look at
the supporting table to see how it works. If you have trouble, let
us or the Audit Commission know!
